ENGLISH   Ms. Kavalek Team Legacy tkavalek@crsd.org 215- 944-2600     WELCOME!   Academic English 8, Honors English 8   (Click on the left tab to view my homework page)   Essential Questions in Honors English 8 and English 8: 1) How can I use reading strategies to access the meaning of text? 2) How do I analyze literature and nonfiction? 3) How does understanding grammar make strong writers and speakers (communicators)?     Some Key Expectations for All Classes....     ---> Students should carry their assignment books, English binders, post-its, pens and pencils, and a self-selected reading book to class daily.   ---> Students should actively read literature and assigned informational readings using the reading strategies SUMMARIZE, CLARIFY, PREDICT, QUESTION, CONNECT, and TALKING TO THE TEXT.   ---> Students should brainstorm/ map out their ideas for a writing assignment before drafting a piece. Then, they should read their writing ALOUD to proofread effectively.   ---> Students should think positively and seek help or clarification when needed.   *Specific coursework for Honors English 8 and English 8 is outlined on initial course handouts. The list of literature and reading selections is below, but please note that it may change.... Thank you!   Honors= short stories from Currents in Fiction, Chasing Lincoln’s Killer by James L. Swanson, I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai, Night by Elie Wiesel, poetry, Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury; and, if time, A Midsummer Night's Dream    Academic= Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen, short stories from Glencoe, Night by Elie Wiesel, poetry, and I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai.
