NATIONAL The Red Ribbon Campaign is a national celebration, which was born in response to the death of drug enforcement administration agent, Enrique (Kiki) Camarena. Abducted by drug dealers while on duty in Mexico in February 1985, Camarena’s badly beaten body was discovered one month later. Friends and neighbors wore small badges of red satin in memory of Camarena and to encourage others to take a stand against drugs. Community by community, the symbolism quickly caught on; Kiki Camarena’s murder served as a catalyst to call people to action, and make a visible commitment by wearing and displaying red ribbons as a symbol of the nation’s intolerance to drugs. During the last week in October, SADD was proud to be able to supply red ribbons to all students and staff at NMS. Throughout the entire week, everyone wore their ribbons and joined the hundreds of millions of people who, since the first national Red Ribbon Celebration in 1988, are celebrating their choice to live healthy lifestyles that are free from drugs and violence. |
